It is a common knowledge that Philippines
is near the Pacific Ocean and is within the Ring of Fire, which is a major area
in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions
occur. And that causes the constant disasters and tremors we experience.
The
National Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM), observed this whole month of July
with the theme “Kahandaan sa Sakuna’t Peligro Para sa Tunay na Pagbabago”,
calls for action among the national agencies and local government units to
implement disaster resilience campaign towards increasing public awareness on
the importance of disaster risk reduction and management.
Four
thematic areas will be covered namely: disaster prevention and mitigation,
disaster preparedness, disaster response and disaster rehabilitation and
recovery. And this is according to the Department of Health’s page in the
internet.
National
Disaster Resilience Month (NDRM) was formerly called National Disaster
Consciousness Month (NDCM). It was renamed to shift from disaster awareness to
building disaster resilience.
As the
theme applies, preparedness is something we really need to have in terms of any
disaster that could happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. But we also need to
remember that after everything that could possibly happen, even if worst does come
to worst, we need to possess the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties
brought by disasters. Especially when we are caught up in it or even if we are
not the center of damage.
It is
what we would call a weapon and it would be used against disasters. To reduce
damage and to stay alive.
